This Week's meditation

Romans 8: 8-11

But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.

This week allow yourself to become more and more aware of the Spirit of God that dwells within you and within those with whom you share your days.

This is a very often misunderstood passage, especially if parts are lifted out of context. It is often used to rail against our human physicality, "the flesh."

First of all, the Greek term used, sarx, can be translated in many ways. Secondly, obviously our bodies are not somehow "evil," or Paul would not go on in the passage quoted, to assure us our bodies will also be raised from the dead, as was Christ's.

What Paul is saying here is we are a totality, sarx ["flesh," whatever the meaning], pneuma ["spirit" or "life"], and psyche ["soul,"
that part God has given us which makes us unique individuals]. We must not dwell on any one part exclusively. In some sense, Christ was an early practitioner of "holistic medicine." Paul is saying there is more to us than just existence.
